Hypnotherapy: A Tool for Smoking Cessation
According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 45 million people in the United States smoke. Cigarette use remains the leading preventable cause of death in the United States, accounting for 1 death in 5. Smoking claims 438,000 lives each year.
Excessive smoking is a very common condition that can be treated through hypnotherapy. Hypnotherapy can weaken underlying impulses that create the desire to smoke, remove rationalizations and tensions and reinforce the client's motivation and commitment to focus and quit.
There are many hypnotherapeutic approaches and each hypnotherapist may use a different approach depending on the client's individual needs. This therapeutic individualization helps to create successful long lasting results by offering clients specific tactics and mental rewiring. A study conducted in 2007 by Dr. Faysal Hasan MD and colleagues from North Shore Medical Center and Massachusetts General Hospital showed that “[s]moking clients who participated in one hypnotherapy session were more likely to be nonsmokers at six months compared to clients using nicotine replacement therapy alone or clients who quit “cold turkey”.
Another study conducted by researchers at the University of Scranton in 2002 took 60 volunteers who wanted to quit smoking. The researchers assigned 20 volunteers to a placebo control condition, 20 to a no-treatment control condition and 20 to a single hypnotherapy session. The study showed that the volunteers who participated in the single hypnotherapy session “smoked significantly less cigarettes and were significantly more abstinent than the placebo control and the no-session group even at a 48-week follow up.”
It is important to note that many studies often suggest more than one treatment is often necessary for achieving desired results and avoiding relapses. During the series of treatments clients must stay motivated and continue working with the hypnotherapists. “Unfortunately, those who relapse or do not stop smoking after treatment label themselves as failures” and do not continue with follow-up visits. Additionally, many clients expect immediate results believing hypnotherapy to be a “magical, mystical cure”; however this treatment is one that requires long-term continual focus and dedication from both client and hypnotherapist.

Hypnosis is the most effective way of giving up smoking, according to the largest ever scientific comparison of ways of breaking the habit. A meta-analysis, statistically combining results of more than 600 studies of 72,000 people from America and Europe to compare various methods of quitting. On average, hypnosis was over three times as effective as nicotine replacement methods and 15 times as effective as trying to quit alone.

90.6% Success Rate for Smoking Cessation Using Hypnosis
Of 43 consecutive patients undergoing this treatment protocol, 39 reported remaining abstinent from tobacco use at follow-up (6 months to 3 years post-treatment). This represents a 90.6% success rate using hypnosis.
87% Reported Abstinence From Tobacco Use With Hypnosis
A field study of 93 male and 93 female CMHC outpatients examined the facilitation of smoking cessation by using hypnosis. At 3-month follow-up, 86% of the men and 87% of the women reported continued abstinence from the use of tobacco using hypnosis.
81% Reported They Had Stopped Smoking After Hypnosis
Thirty smokers enrolled in an HMO were referred by their primary physician for treatment. Twenty-one patients returned after an initial consultation and received hypnosis for smoking cessation. At the end of treatment, 81% of those patients reported that they had stopped smoking, and 48% reported abstinence at 12 months post-treatment.
